No Fewer Than 6 Perish in Crowd Crush at Ghana Military Recruitment Event
At least six people have lost their lives during a stampede at a military recruitment gathering held in a sports arena in the West African nation.
The Wednesday's "tragic" incident seems to have been caused by "a sudden rush of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed into the entrances," announced a statement from the nation's military.
Twenty-two others were hurt, among them five who are in serious state.
Thousands had turned up at the El-Wak sports venue, in the main city, Accra, with the hope of joining the armed forces.
The country has a rate of joblessness among young people of about thirty-two percent, the most recent government statistics show, and such enlistment drives typically draw massive gatherings and often result in chaotic scenes.
The closing date to submit applications for this recruitment was prolonged for a seven days to allow for additional candidates, as a number had experienced difficulties in the process.
Military representative Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin said the stampede occurred before the planned commencement time of 6:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time.
The nation's leader John Mahama has visited the wounded in medical care.
Calm has been reestablished, and the enlistment process has since started.
