In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
